**Safety Case Development for a Jack-Up Barge** In the high-stakes marine industry, safety isn't just a requirement—it's a responsibility. As part of our commitment to safety and operational excellence, we’ve to develop a comprehensive **Safety Case** for our jack-up barge operations, in alignment with the **MODU Code (Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit)** guidelines. The safety case is a robust framework designed to ensure the identification, assessment, and mitigation of risks throughout the barge’s lifecycle. It includes: 1️⃣ **Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA):** A systematic evaluation of potential hazards unique to jack-up barge operations, from environmental challenges to operational risks. 2️⃣ **Safety Critical Elements (SCEs):** Defining and managing key systems, structures, and processes critical to maintaining the integrity of the barge and preventing catastrophic failures. 3️⃣ **Emergency Preparedness:** Establishing effective procedures and response plans to manage emergencies, ensuring the safety of the crew, the environment, and the asset. 4️⃣ **Compliance with International Standards:** The safety case complies with **MODU guidelines**, **SOLAS**, **MARPOL**, **ISM Code**, and **Class Society Requirements**, among others. 5️⃣ **Crew Competency and Training:** Ensuring all personnel onboard are trained, competent, and prepared to manage safety systems and respond to emergencies effectively. Through proactive risk management, continuous monitoring, and a culture of safety, we aim to achieve **zero incidents** and sustain operational excellence. Let’s build a safer, more sustainable future in offshore operations—one safety case at a time. #SafetyFirst #JackUpBarge #MODUCompliance #RiskManagement #HSEExcellence #MaritimeSafety #OffshoreOperations #MarineEngineering #ZeroIncidents #OperationalExcellence #MaritimeInnovation #SafetyCaseDevelopment

🚢 Enhancing Liftboat Safety with the Bow-Tie Model 🚢In offshore operations, especially liftboats, Safety Critical Elements (SCE) are essential for preventing incidents and ensuring smooth, safe operations. The Bow-Tie Model is a practical and visual tool to manage and control hazards, offering a clear breakdown of threats, barriers, and responses. Here's how it works, tailored for liftboat safety:🔎 Key Components of the Bow-Tie Model1️⃣ Hazard IdentificationA hazard is any condition with the potential to cause harm. In liftboat operations, hazards could include heavy lifting, jacking systems, or adverse weather.2️⃣ Top EventThe top event is the moment control over the hazard is lost. For liftboats, this could be crane failure, leg instability, or structural collapse.3️⃣ ThreatsThreats are conditions that lead to the top event. Examples for liftboats include:Overloading cranes or decks.Equipment failure, such as hydraulic malfunctions.Harsh weather conditions.4️⃣ Preventive BarriersPreventive barriers stop threats from escalating into incidents. Key barriers include:Load monitoring systems to prevent overloading.Regular inspections and maintenance for cranes, jacking systems, and critical components.Weather monitoring and operational limits.Competency training for staff on operational safety.5️⃣ ConsequencesIf a top event occurs, consequences can be catastrophic, including structural damage, environmental pollution, or loss of life.6️⃣ Recovery BarriersRecovery barriers minimize the impact of consequences. Examples include:Emergency response plans and evacuation drills.Fire suppression systems and spill kits.Reliable communication systems for rapid response coordination.7️⃣ Escalation Factors and EF BarriersEscalation factors are conditions that weaken barriers, such as poor maintenance or delayed weather decisions. EF barriers counteract these risks through robust maintenance schedules, audits, and clear decision-making protocols.🌟 Why Use the Bow-Tie Model? The Bow-Tie Model helps:✅ Identify all potential threats and controls.✅ Strengthen preventive and recovery measures.✅ Align operations with Opco and global safety standards.Implementing this model fosters a culture of safety, reducing risks while improving operational efficiency.Safety is not just compliance—it's about proactive prevention and readiness for any eventuality.Learn more about SCEs in offshore operations in Senwork’s article on process safety.#LiftboatSafety #SafetyCriticalElements #BowTieModel #HSE #OffshoreOperations #RiskManagement #MarineConsulting #OffshoreSafety

*Conducting a Superintendent vessel inspection* 🚢 is always a challenging task, especially when time is limited. In a short window, you must complete an extensive questionnaire 📋, carry out a series of tests ⚙️, run safety drills 🚨, inspect every aspect of the vessel 🔍, and conduct competence assessments ✅—all without interrupting the ship's operations or interfering with the crew's well-deserved rest hours 😴.However, this can be achieved efficiently with the right support from the crew 👷♂️, leveraging modern devices and technology 📱💻, and drawing on years of experience and knowledge 🧠. The crew's cooperation is key, and it's their dedication that ensures everything runs smoothly during the inspection process.A huge thanks to the crew for their invaluable assistance, and to #BSM for the opportunity to do what I am passionate about—ensuring safety, efficiency, and compliance on the vessels we care for 🌊⚓.#SuperintendentInspection #SafetyAtSea #MaritimeExcellence #BernhardSchulteShipmanagement #ShippingIndustry #VesselInspection #CrewCollaboration #MarineSafety

*Offshore Safety Standards for Liftboats : A Benchmark for Operational Excellence*In the demanding offshore environment, the importance of adhering to Operating Company (Opco) standards for Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) cannot be overstated. For liftboats/ jack-up barges, these standards are not just compliance boxes to check—they are the backbone of safety, efficiency, and operational success.Liftboats are vital to offshore operations, pose unique risks due to their design and operational scope. From jacking systems to stability monitoring, the challenges are amplified under harsh marine conditions. Opco HSE standards establish a framework that ensures these risks are systematically mitigated. Why Compliance Matters1. Enhanced Safety: Compliance minimizes risks to personnel, assets, and the environment. Adhering to standards like IMO MODU Code, SOLAS, and ISO 45001 helps prevent incidents that could lead to injuries or fatalities.2. Operational Efficiency: Following Opco standards ensures that operations are streamlined and downtime is reduced. Non-compliance can lead to costly delays or equipment failures.3. Reputation Management: Companies operating within the guidelines set by industry leaders uphold a reputation for reliability and professionalism. Non-compliance risks regulatory scrutiny and damage to credibility.4. Regulatory Alignment: Opcos often align their standards with global and local regulations, ensuring operators meet or exceed legal requirements. This alignment simplifies audits and inspections.5. Prolonged Asset Life: Regular inspections, maintenance protocols, and design considerations mandated by Opco standards extend the operational life of assets.Key Areas of Focus- Structural Integrity: Periodic inspections of jacking systems and hulls.- Emergency Preparedness: Drills and equipment aligned with Opco-mandated protocols.- Environmental Protection: MARPOL compliance to mitigate pollution.- Personnel Competence: Training programs that meet Opco standards to enhance crew readiness.Compliance is not a one-time achievement; it’s a continuous process requiring collaboration between operators, regulators, and industry stakeholders. To all operating company affiliates and offshore professionals: Let’s share insights on how we can elevate Opco-compliant practices, especially in the context of lift-boats/jack-up barges operations. I was part of a 14-man team mobilized to the Bonny CLP for a rehabilitation project, which involved the installation of a boat catcher and anode system. Our team consisted of a Dive Superintendent, Dive Supervisor, myself as the HSE Advisor, a Dive Tech, a 3.4U Inspector, and 9 Divers.Upon arrival, we conducted a survival drill, in accordance with statutory requirements when a dive team reaches a new site or when there's a change in the Dive Supervisor. We also held a management meeting on board to review our Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA), transitioning from HIRA 1 to HIRA 2 as the project evolved. Our first task was the boat catcher installation, which took about a month, including delays due to weather conditions. Following this, we proceeded with inspections (CP readings and cleaning) at designated locations for the anode installation. The anode installation was divided into two phases: South Phase and North Phase. We successfully completed the South Phase before a project change was communicated. Our major challenge during the project was weather, as we often experienced high swells and strong currents, which made it unsafe for any diver to embark on tasks. Additionally, we encountered a 20-inch corroded member standing above water near one of the designated spots for an anode installation. This led us to pause diving activities until we could eliminate the threat, ensuring safe conditions for the dive team before resuming operations.Since we were on a Jack-Up Barge (JUB), and not a Dynamic Positioning (DP) vessel, we had to leave the location temporarily to allow the construction crew to work on the platform. Once they complete their tasks, the barge will jack down and reposition for the North Phase of the anode installation.Stay tuned as I share more insights on my day-to-day activities and responsibilities as an HSE Advisor during this project.#HSEAdvisor #HealthAndSafety #MarineProjects #OffshoreSafety #CathodicProtection #DivingOperations #ProjectManagement #OilAndGasIndustry #AnodeInstallation #JackUpBarge #BoatCatcher #OffshoreConstruction #RiskAssessment #HazardIdentification #MaritimeSafety
