We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Paulette Dozier. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Paulette below.

Paulette, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

PARENTAL ROLE MODEL
I can’t remember a time when I didn’t feel a strong sense of confidence and self-esteem, and I credit my
mother for this. The determination and self-assurance she displayed when going after anything she
wanted, evidently left a lasting impression. Her resilience and ability to confront challenges as she did,
instilled the same traits of confidence and drive in me from an early age. An example of her
determination to succeed was following her short lived marriage. My mom found herself divorced with two
young kids to raise as a single parent. Yet despite her marital status, she remained focused on improving
her life by pursuing a college degree, and obtaining better employment to ensure financial stability for her
family. Both of which she achieved.
A TEENAGE GO GETTER
Throughout my school years, the example she had set really came in handy. I found myself never
hesitating to pursue whatever I set my mind to. Participating in extracurricular activities was high on my
list. And having achieved positions such as the co-captain of the cheering squad, a first chair musician in
the marching band, and serving as an elected member of the student council, made me feel invincible
able to achieve anything I wanted to. Even at 15, with her support I went on to pursue a successful
career as a fashion model in New York’s garment district.
ALL GROWN UP
As I grew into adulthood, when faced with a goal or task, I learned to analyze the pros and cons of a
situation to determine whether or not it would be worth pursuing. If I proceeded and obstacles came my
way, I searched for alternative approaches to help reach the objective. However, when faced with a
overwhelming physical task so draining to the extent I might feel incapable of continuing, I simply think
about the hardships and struggles of my ancestors, realizing that their plight was far more arduous than
the challenges I have faced. And with that thought, I forge ahead.
SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING
I never forget to call upon a power higher than myself to get me through the day and life in general.
When I wake up, each day I ask for help, especially if I feel sluggish or lazy as it may be sometimes. With
the guidance given to me, I search within for the strength to face situations that will be placed in my path
and proceed to plan my day.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

WHAT DO I DO?
In a few words, I am an entertainer: singer, actress, voiceover performer, arts educator, and former dancer.
I have worked in the industry for over 40 years, and still today, my passion for performing remains strong.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of the business, beside the moment of being on stage in the spotlight,
is getting immersed in the creative process. Being able to develop ideas found locked inside where only I
can access them, grants a sense of freedom once the ideas are fully developed and the vision finally
shared with the world. It is truly a gratifying feeling.
I LOVE THIS BUSINESS
I enjoy the arts because it allows you to infuse your work with a personal touch. Whereas in other
professions, you simply follow instructions to get the job done then wash, rinse, and repeat only to make
a living. The arts can call for you to invest much of yourself into the work (a project). And being able to
contribute something that’s uniquely yours makes “the job” more enjoyable. With the investment of self, at
the end of the day or the project, there’s a sense of fulfillment in contributing something distinct to your
work.
Creative expression definitely holds first place for me. Your artistic side must be nurtured and challenged
to learn how far you can go. Yet, it’s equally important not to lose sight of the business aspect. The arts
industry is big business. Even though you are in the industry because you love it, it’s important to lay a
pathway toward success by making connections through networking, and actively seeking opportunities
that can lead to a financially rewarding career.
NEW PROJECTS (A One-Woman-Show and RHYTHM International Fitness)
One-Woman-Show
One of two current projects that I’m working on is a collaboration with friend Anthony Hubert
(actor/director) writing a one-woman-show based on the lives of four jazz icons. Now mind you, my
comfort zone is to receive a script, memorize it, and follow directions. This is the first time I have ever
attempted to write a script. And not only, write a story that has multiple characters with monologues and
dialogue. Aside from exploring these uncharted writing territories, I am also the lead actress responsible
for interpreting each character’s story.
I know it’s a daunting undertaking, but I chose to do this project because over the last four years, my
theater opportunities slowed down considerably. Consequently, I grew restless waiting and hoping for the
next chance to audition. So I decided to DIY, Do It Yourself, or Do It Myself. It seemed to be the only
answer to having a story that would give me what I wanted, which was a production that challenged my
full potential as an actress and singer.
RHYTHM International Fitness
The other project is an exercise program that I launched in 2020 in response to the quarantine
requirements during the Covid outbreak. The program is RHYTHM International Fitness, designed
specifically for mature adults age 50+ but open to younger adults as well. RHYTHM workouts are based
on dance technique, yet no dance experience is needed. The focus is more on getting everyone moving
and grooving so that participants dance their way into healthier living.
I teach classes virtually via Zoom, and also in person at OLLI@UM, which is the Osher Lifelong Learning
Institute at the University of Miami. One key element about RHYTHM classes that inspires the groove is
the music. The songs are very energizing with an assortment of genres to keep things interesting. Plus,
the varied tempos and different dance routines aim to stimulate both the body and mind. So no matter if
you’re into international tunes, modern beats, or nostalgic jams, RHYTHM has got you covered. It’s an
entertaining activity that allows mature adults to proactively work on their physical and mental well-being.
And it also helps steer them away from constantly attributing their health changes and challenges to age.
RHYTHM International Fitness is an encouraging exercise program where O.L.D. means Only Living
Dynamically. It strives to empower individuals by helping them realize that self-care is essential
throughout life in order to maintain good health and strength. RHYTHM can give your body the vitality it
needs to reconnect with the vibrant, energetic you.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

FAITH (Believe beyond yourself and what you can do.)
Embracing the belief in a higher power greater than one’s self, essentially aids in finding strength and the
guidance needed in life. God gives you that strength and guidance.
DETERMINATION (One’s Drive)
Your determination is a driving force that propels you toward success. Although it doesn’t guarantee you
will achieve your objectives, determination can push you to explore alternative paths when faced with
difficult challenges or when things don’t go your way. Adopting the attitude of, “I cannot give up,” or “I
refuse to give up”, enables you to gauge whether or not your pursuit is attainable. And once you know
your target, also think about what you are willing to sacrifice to hit the bullseye.
OPEN TO CHANGE (Acceptance)
Let’s face it. Change is inevitable. We are living in a shrinking world where different cultures are able to
come together simply by way of the internet and sophisticated modes of transportation. The world is
constantly evolving, and choosing not to fear change opens way to discovering potential benefits in
accepting that which is new and different.
Without question new generations come along with fresh ideas, unusual novelties, and unique
innovations that might require learning to do things differently than traditionally performed. Choosing to
fight against these requirements can become a frustrating losing battle. Especially once novel changes
are ingrained in our society and prove their value. The choice to open up to understanding the what’s,
why’s and benefits, you may find that the novelties could offer a solution to our struggles and desires, or
possibly to finding the things we long for.
Of course, not all change is good. However, making an effort to selflessly understand the viewpoint of a
continually changing world, may help create a welcoming environment for all.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?

YOUR NATURAL MAKE-UP
Rely on all of you attributes. They are your make-up and can serve as a guide to knowing your potential.
Your strengths are gifts given to you to help achieve success in life. It’s important to leverage them to
support your aspirations. Embrace your stronger attributes and strive to understand their purpose. Not
utilizing them may eventually lead to regret once you realize their true value.
Similarly, take time to assess your weaknesses and consider if they can be improved. Seek help to
strengthen the weaker qualities. If you learn that you are unable to improve to the level needed, then ask
for support from others. Also, keep in mind that sometimes, what appears to be a weakness could simply
be a sign there’s a lack of interest. When one lacks interest in a specific activity, achieving excellence
becomes less likely due to insufficient dedication. Yet, in spite of this, struggling with a task doesn’t
necessarily mean you cannot succeed at it. You must be smart and entrust it to someone who is capable
of contributing what you can’t in order to see the job through.
